Our 2018 series explores the theme of ‘Home in Exile.’ It will include three world-class European novellas about finding a sense of belonging when you have been forced to leave your country of birth.
Soviet Milk by Nora Ikstena will be our first book for 2018. It is a Latvian bestseller that explores the intimate relationship between three generations of women living under the harsh regime of Soviet rule.
Next comes the remarkable Shadows on the Tundra by Dalia Grinkevičiutė. This Lithuanian book was written on the author’s escape from a Siberian Gulag. Buried in a glass jar and only rediscovered after her death, this tale, like its author, beats the odds to survive.
The final book of 2018 will be Peirene’s first Icelandic translation, And the Wind Sees All by Guđmundur Andri Thorsson. Join a girl in a polka dot dress as she cycles round an Icelandic fishing village, dipping in and out of peoples lives, this experimental novella takes place in the space of two minutes!
