A room without books is like a body without a soul.

G.K.Chesterton (English writer 1874-1936)

Surely no one will disagree, a few books would make these shelves look better. Admittedly a different wall colour would help too. However, I guess painting your house is far more complicated than acquiring some beautiful literature.

Peirene’s Christmas came early this year. In fact last Saturday, when the Nymph opened the newspaper and saw that Blake Morrison had chosen Portrait of the Mother as a Young Woman as one of the Guardian Books of the Year. She was over the moon, and so indeed were Maddy and I. Our first year as a new publisher and one of our titles made it to Books of the Year.

But that’s not all. Beside the Sea, too, is getting a fair amount of sparkling Christmas attention. It has already received a few nominations in the Guardian Readers’ Books of the Year.

So, lots of reason to celebrate. Please do join us for our special Christmas Peirene Salon on the 11th of December, with German Glühwein and Potato Salad, French Brie and Baguette, English Christmas Cake and Scottish Whisky. Our guest will be the brilliant poet Robin Robertson who has just been nominated for the Costa Poetry Award. We are thrilled that he has agreed to this evening.

And last but not least: If the Christmas pressie stress is getting to you – just pop intoPeirene’s little boutique and the Nymph will take care of all your worries. Her gift offer is catching fire fast. As part of our 6 book subscription we have already sent the parcel as far as Australia. And book- and gift shops are offering it as a 3 book delight (of course with the stunning Peirene bag) on their tables. Check out Waterstone’s High Street Kensington, Clerkenwell Tales or the famous Travel Bookshop in Notting Hill.

If we don’t speak to you before, the Nymph, Maddy and I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you for your wonderful support in our first year.

With my best wishes
Meike
