Fellow publishers Peirene likes and recommends.
These are small to medium-size publishing houses. They have a strong vision and make careful selections. It's worthwhile checking on a regular basis the books they sell.
Alma Books
An interesting, versitile publishing house that attempts to be as commercial as possible without loosing the plot. 60% English lit, the rest translations. Their chatty blog is a delight.

And Other Stories
A very exciting new small publisher of foreign fiction - it is organised as a collaboration - a group of people involved in various ways alongside the core team. They are open to welcoming new collaborators, whether for a particular project or becoming part of the day-to-day running of the publishing house.

Archipelago Books
A New York based publishing house that specializes in classical and contemporary world literature in translation. Peirene likes them because she detected "Hyperion" by Friedrich Hoelderlin in their catalogue. The late 18th century poetic novel insprired Nietzsche and Rilke alike.

Canongate
Meike heard their marketing director speak at the Independent Publisher's Guild autumn 2008 conference: energetic, creative and definietly no moaning about the digital age! They publish lots of lighter foreign fiction but also linguistic challenges such as "Eunoia," a book of five chapters and each uses just one vowel.

CB editions
A small publishing house that is "dedicated to publishing surprising books." (Sunday Times). Absolutely true. Among their authors Costa prize winner Christopher Reid.

Capuchin Classics
This publisher caught Peirene's eye purely by chance at the London Bookfair 2009 as she was rushing past their stand. Their beautifully illustrated book series made me stop. Launched in 2008 Capuchin aims at reprinting 18 classic fiction titles (English and foreign, some forgotten, some famous) from the last two centuries each year.

Dalkey Archive
Toussaint, one of Peirene's favourite French authors, is published by Dalkey. In addition they bring out the highly informative tri-quarterly journal "The Review of Contemporary Fiction" with a great back list .

Gallic Books
THE publisher for French literature in English translation. Hugely successful - among their titles "The Elegance of the Hedgehog". Peirene's guiding star.

Libris
This little publishing house - based in North London like Peirene - is an absolute gem. For over twenty years now it has been publishing new and first translations of German classics, such as Goethe, Moerike, Fontane, Kaestner, Brecht and many more.

Melville House Publishing
Peirene could almost be envious of their "Contemporary Art of the Novella" book series. They brought out in English Kevin Vennemann's "Close to Jedenew" - a novella Peirene herself would have loved to publish!

Open Letter
An outstanding litarary press - specializing in international works in translation. Linked to the University in Rochester, their selected novels and short stories present innovative, often experiemental, exciting writing. Margaret Duras is among their authors.

Oxygen Books
What have Irène Némirovsky, Hans Christian Anderson and Gertrude Stein in common? Paris of course. Oxygen Books publishes literary city guides worth a read before hopping across the channel and you will definietly impress the French Intelligentsia with you thorough knowledege of World literature.

Parthian
This small Welsh publishing house concentrates on translations from Welsh, Catalan and Spanish. A beautiful eclectic mix!
www.parthianbooks.com
Persephone Books
Persephone publishes mainly English female literature from the 1940's and thus seems at first glance a bit removed from Peirene's mission. However, their books make delightful presents for mother-in-laws and their online book reviews are, in themselves, genuine good reads.

Pinter & Martin
No literature here. But if you are into pregnancy, childbirth, parenting and psychology check their books out. Moreover, they are the publisher of the hugely successful "Irrationality" by Stuart Sutherland. "You must buy this book, for every home should have it." The Guardian

Pushkin Press
There is only one thing that needs to be said about Pushkin Press: They have published Peirene's all time favourite Kirkegaard! I think I can rest my case.

A vibrant Cambridge based publisher of modern, living, breathing poets and short story writers. They feature many English authors, but some translations too.
