Daquise was also a favourite of mine, too, and when I was last in South Ken I noted the makeover with horror. I won't go there again. It was an unreconstructed corner of Eastern Europe, complete with Warsaw Pact decor - and the potato latkes were terrific, especially washed down with Zwiec. I once saw an old couple in there - the man had a white handlebar moustache a yard wide. God, I despise these airheads who think making everything just like everywhere else is an improvement, and I'm glad you gave them a rough time. But then maybe I need a holiday too.... in Moldova, perhaps?

I remember being fifteen and hating my parent's holiday choices. Somehow it happens and then you often go back to agreeing with them after your teens. Quite a few restaurants I've loved have gone, to be replaced with a replica of a dozen others already nearby. And when chains take over family-run places, it's very upsetting.

Enjoy your holiday!

Have fun on your holiday! And I remember Cafe Daquise as well! I'm sad to hear it's no longer what it used to be as I used to eat there once in a while as a student at Imperial. Sad.
