John, thank you for your compliment re my blog and thank you, too, for your question.
The subject matter of Beside the Sea is, in my view, the destructive side of maternal love. And that is a taboo subject in our society. We like to believe that motherly love is always positive, always straight forward. I.e as long as a mother loves her children, we like to argue, they will come to no harm by her. Beside the Sea is showing the opposite. In particular women who are mothers can sometimes find that side of motherhood difficult and thus might react strongly against the book or indeed don't want to look at it at all.

Having just discovered your blog, Meike, I am reading through the archives and thoroughly enjoying myself.

But I wanted to ask a question: what do you think is important in the difference between male and female responses to Beside the Sea? Or if you can't answer that without spoiling the book, don't bother! In any event I hope to read it myself soon and share my own male point of view...

Iris, thank you so much for this lovely note. Of course I wouldn't dream of deleting it. I am so impressed by Sakura from Chasing Bawa and also Hayley from http://desperatereader.blogspot.com/ who blogged about Stone in a Landslide a couple of days ago. I didn't expect such quick responses at all - and the book isn't even out until 10th of June - but of course can be pre-ordered from amazon :-). It warms my heart to think that it is already attracting such positive attention.

I'm not sure if this is the place to leave this sort of comment, but I thought it might since this post is all about being a small publisher. I just had to let you know that I found out about you through a review I read of "Stone in a Landslide" on Chasing Bawa: http://chasingbawa.wordpress.com/. After reading her review I thought I'd browse your site and I wanted to let you know that the books you publish look absolutely wonderful. If your releases don't pick up from the start, I'm sure they deserve to. I'll certainly keep your books in mind for when I next visit a bookshop (or order books online). I hope you don't mind me leaving this comment, otherwise: feel free to delete it. I just got all excited about finding such a wonderful website with wonderful-looking books.
