Wise words. A case in point is Hugo Wilcken's novel Colony, which I read last year. It was published in 2007 by HarperCollins - but the editor by whom it had been bought had since been edged out in a reshuffle and now it was homeless. It was published nonetheless, but not in any proper sense. It wasn't reviewed anywhere, it wasn't stocked anywhere (I truly believe it just sat in their warehouse), and yet it was one of the best novels I had read in ages. I reviewed it on my blog and managed to approximately double or triple its (very very low) sales to that point. If Colony had been published by Pereine, or CB Editions, or Pushkin Press, or another of the resourceful and passionate small publishers out there, I have no doubt it would have done much better. I hope Wilcken's next book goes to someone who knows what to do with it.
