Friends of Peirene

The following is a list of our favourite independent bookshops across the country - they've supported us over the years, and we believe in supporting them. So next time you want a Peirene book (or indeed, any book), get away from your screen, and get thee to a shop:

Belgravia Books

59 Ebury Street, London, SW1W 0NZ

An independent bookshop on the fringes of Belgravia, a short walk from Victoria’s many stations. The home of publishing imprints Gallic Books and Aardvark Bureau, we like to focus on titles from independent publishers and translated fiction and nonfiction. We stock a lot, we read a lot, and we have been known to be rather forceful in our recommendations.

 Big Green Bookshop

Unit 1, Brampton Park Rd, London N22 6BG

Tim West and Simon Key opened the Big Green Bookshop in March 2008, after the big chain store where they worked in Wood Green closed, leaving the area with no dedicated bookshop. After much joy and much frustration and a huge amount of help and support from the local community the shop opened its doors to fanfares and cheers and a cake or two. A bookshop with a thoughtful range of titles, friendly knowledgeable staff and some cracking gems that surprise and excite us. They love their books and when you leave you’ll look forward to coming back again.

They celebrated us at their annual BookFest in 2014, so let us celebrate them now: it's no surprise that they were named the Vintage Independent Bookshop of the Year 2015, the place has impeccable taste (just look at the picture below). Friendly, personal bookselling in a cosy, charming environment.

Word Power Books

43-45 West Nicolson Street, Edinburgh EH8 9DB

There's more than just one online bookshop out there - and Word Power pays its taxes. In their own words:

'The range of books we offer gives you fast track entrance to a world of publishing outwith the mainstream, a world where independent publishers, small presses, new writers with no prior sales history, individuals producing their own zines all have an equal voice and sit happily alongside Stupid White Men or No Logo on the shelves.'

Hear, hear.
